Traditional Irish Coffee Recipe
There’s nothing quite like a warm Irish coffee to end a cozy meal. With rich hot coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, a touch of sweetness, and a layer of lightly whipped cream, this classic drink is simple yet wonderfully comforting.
Often served in Irish pubs and homes alike, traditional Irish coffee has become a favorite way to warm up on a chilly evening or finish a festive gathering. When traveling in chilly Ireland, it was a perfect way to warm back up after trekking through the Highlands. It’s also especially perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any holiday celebration, when good food, friends, and a little Irish cheer are all part of the fun.
Whether you’re traveling in brisk climates, hosting a dinner party or simply enjoying a quiet moment after dinner, this traditional Irish coffee recipe is an easy way to add a touch of Irish hospitality to your table.
Serves: 1
Prep: 10 minutes
ingredients:
- Freshly brewed decaf coffee
- 1-2 teaspoons Irish whiskey
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
- Whipping cream
- Chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder (optional garnish)
- Hint: Add 2 tablespoons Bailey’s Irish Cream for a little extra mmm!

Instructions:
- Start the coffee pot and freshly brew good quality coffee.
- Lightly whip the cream. Consistency is ideal if it’s between whipped & poured. If it’s too thick, you’ll end up with a mouthful of whipped cream. Too thin, and it won’t sit on top.
- Preheat your glass mug with hot water. Pour the water out before filling the mug 1/2 full with coffee.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons of Baileys Irish Cream and 1-2 teaspoons of Irish whiskey (if using). Mix well to combine. Top with more coffee to just below the rim.
- Add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar if you prefer your drink sweeter. Stir until dissolved.
- Pour it gently over the back of a warm spoon so it sits perfectly on top.
- Garnish with chocolate shavings or a light dusting of cocoa powder, and serve immediately.
Substitutions & Variations
- No whiskey? You can skip it or add an extra splash of Baileys for more creaminess.
- Non-dairy option: Use a dairy-free coffee creamer (like almond, oat, or coconut milk creamer) and mix it with a splash of dairy-free Irish cream liqueur.
- Switch the garnish: Try a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg for a taste of fall.
Make-Ahead Tips
- Brew your coffee in advance and keep it in a thermos to stay warm if you’re serving this drink for a group.
- Whip your cream a few hours ahead of time and keep it chilled in the fridge until you’re ready to use it.
