The Secret Irish Code Menu: A Fun Twist for Your Dinner Party
There’s nothing like a little mystery to spice up a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This year, I’m sharing an idea I created a while back. It’s a full Irish code menu. From starters to desserts, drinks, and even your forks and napkins. . . it will all be written entirely in playful Irish slang. Guests won’t know exactly what they’re ordering, which makes discovering each dish half the fun!
1. What Is an Irish Code Menu?
Think of it as a menu with a sense of humor and a bit of mischief:
- Every item is renamed with Irish words or slang.
- Familiar foods and serving items become a guessing game. For example:
- Shepherd’s pie → “The Lads’ Hotpot”
- Guinness beef stew → “Black Gold Stew”
- Napkins → “Woolen Slob”
- Goal becomes trying to complete an entire meal with utensils by the 3rd Round or 3rd Course.
It turns an ordinary dinner into an interactive experience where your guests are part of the fun.
2. Why It Works
- Engages guests: Everyone loves guessing what they’re getting.
- Adds humor and charm: Light-hearted names spark conversation and laughter.
- Fits the theme: Complements your Irish pub dinner party perfectly.
3. How to Create Your Irish Code Menu
- Create the Menu: Have a copy printed of all your menu items placed at each place setting. Download my Irish Code Dinner Party Menu & Activity.

- Create an Order Form or use mine: Divide the number of items by 3 courses.
- Include drink names in Irish code too.
- Print Page 2 of the Party Menu & guests can have fun guessing what each menu item is. Optional: Prepare a prize for the winner!
- Even utensils and napkins can get playful names. It’s all part of the immersive experience!
4. The Process & Extending the Fun
- How to Play: Guests will fill out the order form for their first course. Here’s a copy of that here. Host(s) will deliver the first course and guests will discover what’s missing. Repeat for the 2nd & 3rd Course. Guests will share with each other, trying to crack the menu code & may finally get their fork by the 3rd Course which creates the fun!
- Encourage photos: Guests will love snapping their “mystery meal” before diving in.
- Dress Up: Invite your guests to dress the part with green attire to celebrate the occasion.
With an Irish code menu, your dinner party becomes more than a meal. It’s a full-on St. Patrick’s Day adventure. Who knew forks and napkins could be so entertaining?

Tips for an Organized Host
Hosting a St. Patrick’s Day dinner party with multiple courses and fun surprises can be a lot to manage, so a little planning goes a long way. Here are some tips to keep everything running smoothly:
- Enlist a Helper: Have a trusted friend or family member help with setup, serving, and refills. Make sure it’s someone who isn’t participating as a guest or at least doesn’t mind not being involved in the game. They’ll keep the evening flowing while you enjoy hosting.
- Assign Table Names: If your guests are spread across multiple tables, assign each table a fun Irish name. Classic options like O’Reilly, Donavon, O’Leary, or McIntosh add a playful touch and help everyone find their seat. It also allows serving the ordered courses to be managed correctly.
- Create Table Labels: Make sure each table has a clear label so guests and servers can easily see their designated spot.
- Prep Ahead: Chop vegetables, prepare dishes & drink station. Line up serving utensils ahead of time. The less you have to scramble during the party, the more you can relax and enjoy your guests.
- Label Your Dishes: Every dish should have a small label describing what it is. This is a must when you’re using the Irish Code Menu, so the servers don’t forget what each item or dish is.
- Organize the Serving Area:
- Arrange your kitchen island or buffet with each labeled dish in order of typical service. Keep hot dishes warm in the oven or insulated trays and ensure cold dishes are ready to serve.
- Make Water Accessible: Pour water into pitchers for each table so guests can serve themselves without waiting. Guests need to be hydrated if serving alcohol.
Right Before Guests Arrive
- Decorate Thoughtfully & Play Irish Music in the Background: Add festive touches to each table: green napkins, live shamrocks, small candles, green & gold confetti; but hold off on full place settings since some of the place setting is part of the game.
- Keeping It Fun: Remember, this is a playful St. Patrick’s Day gathering. Little touches like themed table names, handwritten labels, or fun garnishes make a big impression without adding stress.
