Kentucky Mint Julep
There’s nothing quite like a classic Kentucky Mint Julep to capture the spirit of spring in the South. With its refreshing blend of fresh mint, sugar, crushed ice, and smooth bourbon, this iconic cocktail is as timeless as it is simple.
Whether you’re hosting a Derby Day gathering or enjoying a quiet afternoon on the porch, this classic cocktail is the perfect way to sip and savor the season.
A Southern Classic: The Story Behind the Mint Julep
The mint julep’s history is as cool and layered as the drink itself. Its origins trace back to the 18th-century South, where it began as a medicinal tonic, a simple mix of mint and spirits thought to soothe the stomach. But it was in Kentucky where it found its true home, becoming forever linked with the state’s signature bourbon and rich traditions. Served in a frosty silver or pewter cup designed to keep every sip perfectly chilled, the Mint Julep has evolved from a practical remedy into a beloved ritual.
Mint Julep Tips for the Perfect Pour
The cup matters. A traditional metal julep cup, silver or pewter, creates that signature frosty finish, but a sturdy rocks glass will work if needed. The goal is simple: keep your drink ice-cold from first sip to last.
Crushed ice is essential. It packs tightly, chills the drink quickly, and creates the smooth, slushy texture that defines a proper Mint Julep. Cubed ice just won’t deliver the same effect, so it’s worth taking a moment to crush it היט.
This is a build-in-the-glass cocktail. Skip the shaker and assemble everything directly in your serving cup. Layering the ingredients is part of the ritual—and it ensures the perfect balance, dilution, and flavor in every sip.
Kentucky Mint Julep Recipe
Servings: 1
Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 ounces bourbon
- 1/2 ounce simple syrup
- 3-6 fresh mint leaves
- crushed ice

Instructions
- Make Ahead Simple Syrup: Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring just until the sugar completely dissolves. Do not let it boil. Remove from heat, let it cool completely, then transfer to a jar and refrigerate. This can be done days ahead.
- Add simple syrup to a julep glass. Using a muddler or back of a wooden spoon, express the essential oils from the 3-4 mint leaves into the syrup and rub on inside of the glass.
- Add the bourbon and crushed ice over the syrup and mint.
- Stir and add as much crushed ice as the glass can hold. Rub mint leaf between hands to express the aroma and garnish the julep.

Its crisp, cooling taste and classic presentation make it a standout at any spring or summer gathering.
