A Staple on Irish Tables
In Ireland, brown bread is almost as common at the table as a pint of Guinness. It’s a staple served alongside soups, stews, and hearty meals in homes and pubs alike. Traditionally, it became popular years ago because whole wheat flour was far more affordable than white flour, making brown bread a practical everyday loaf for many families. Even though flour prices have changed over time, this rustic bread has remained a beloved part of Irish cooking and culture.
Brown Bread vs. Irish Soda Bread
Irish brown bread and Irish soda bread are often confused, but they’re actually quite different. Both are quick breads, meaning they’re made without yeast and don’t require time to rise. Irish brown bread gets its deeper, nutty flavor from whole wheat flour and often includes ingredients like molasses, oats, or even stout beer. Irish soda bread, on the other hand, is usually made with white flour and has a lighter texture and a much milder flavor.
What to Serve with Irish Brown Bread
Irish brown bread is wonderfully versatile and pairs perfectly with a variety of comforting dishes. Its hearty texture and nutty flavor make it perfect for soaking up rich broths and sauces.
Hearty soups and stews
A thick slice of brown bread is perfect for dipping into warm bowls of soup or stew. It’s especially delicious served alongside Irish stew, beef stew, or a cozy bowl of vegetable soup.
Butter and jam
Sometimes the simplest way is the best. Serve slices warm from the oven with a generous spread of butter and your favorite jam or marmalade for a comforting breakfast or afternoon treat.
Sharp Irish cheddar
A slice of toasted brown bread topped with sharp cheddar (Irish cheddar if you can find it) makes a wonderful open-faced sandwich. It’s especially good alongside soups or stews.
Smoked salmon or savory spreads
For a more traditional Irish-style serving, top slices with smoked salmon, cream cheese, or a savory spread for a simple but flavorful bite.
Eggs for breakfast
Irish brown bread is perfect for breakfast. Toast a slice and serve it with eggs and bacon for a hearty start to the day.

Ingredients
Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.
- Roughly chop 1/4 cup of the oats. Evenly coat the bottom and sides of the pan with the oats, tapping out any excess. Set aside for the top of the loaf.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining 3/4 cup of rolled oats, flour, baking soda, and salt. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
- Add the melted butter, Guinness, buttermilk, molasses, and honey. Stir until just combined, being careful not to over mix.
- Transfer the mixture to the loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Scatter the reserved chopped oats over top.
- Bake 45-50 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
- Serve with butter or jam.
Warm, rustic, and wonderfully simple, Irish brown bread is the perfect addition to any St. Patrick’s Day table. Serve it fresh from the oven with Irish Guinness Beef Stew and enjoy every last crumb.
