Hi there,
If you’re anything like me, this past week felt like a blur in the best way. A little champagne, good friends, a lot of tradition, and everything we love about spring here in Louisville.
There’s just something about the energy around Kentucky Derby that lingers… the tables set just right, the menus planned ahead, the simple joy of gathering people together.
And instead of letting that feeling fade, I like to carry it straight into the next occasion . . . Mother’s Day. I lost my mother a few years ago, but there’s nothing like reading the writing on the recipe cards of favorite dishes to bring her right back to the kitchen with me.
From Derby Hosting to Mother’s Day Brunch
Since you’ve hosted (or even just bookmarked ideas), you’re already halfway there.
Think about it:
- You’ve tested your menu
- You know what people loved
- You likely still have a few ingredients or serving pieces ready to go
Mother’s Day doesn’t need to be a whole new plan, just a simpler version of what you already created.
A Simple Mother’s Day Brunch Menu
Here’s some of my mother’s favorites: make ahead and perfect for a relaxed morning/early afternoon at home:
- Scrambled Egg Casserole
- Sour Cream Coffee Cake
- Almost Dessert Fruit Salad
- Deviled eggs
- Pimiento cheese with crackers
For drinks:
It’s familiar, it’s seasonal, and best of all, it doesn’t require starting from scratch.
A Few Easy Touches That Make It Special
A host doesn’t need much to make it feel thoughtful:
- Fresh flowers from the garden or Trader Joe’s
- Linen napkins or anything that feels a little elevated
- A playlist in the background
- Letting the table stay a little longer than usual
That’s really the heart of it.
If You’d Rather Go Out…
Rather not host this year? This is one of the prettiest times to get out and enjoy the city.
A spring morning around Waterfront Park, back to Churchill Downs for Mother’s Day Brunch or a relaxed afternoon near NuLu can feel just as special, no reservations required beyond a little time together. Here’s some other favorites that need reservations:
- J Graham’s Cafe Inside the Brown Hotel – is the iconic Louisville brunch. Think Hot Browns, polished service, and a very “treat Mom” atmosphere.
- Le Moo Known for over-the-top brunch (sometimes even drag brunch vibes depending on the day). Fun, lively, and memorable.
- The Village Anchor Charming, Southern-inspired, and perfect if you want something pretty & relaxed. Great patio if weather cooperates.
- River House Upscale riverfront dining – ideal if you want a scenic, slower-paced celebration.
Still in the Derby Spirit?
And if you’re not quite ready to let it all go (after all, the races are still running through June), you can revisit everything here:
A Day at the Kentucky Derby – A Timeless Tradition in Our Own Backyard Derby Brunch Menu & Hosting Ideas
(And yes, I fully support one more round of mimosas this weekend.)
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. A simple table, good food, and time together is more than enough.
A Simple Mother’s Day Table
I like to keep things classic and unfussy with just a few details that make everything feel pulled together:
- Classic white serving platter
- Lovely champagne flutes
- Linen napkins in soft spring tones
- A go-to vase for fresh flowers
- Pretty water pitcher
(You can shop everything here if you’re pulling things together last-minute.)
Hope this gives you an easy starting point, whether you’re hosting, visiting, or just slowing down a bit.
Happy Hosting, Kim
P.S. If you’re new here, I’d love for you to stay awhile. There’s more inspiration for entertaining, travel, and everyday favorites waiting for you.
