A Girls Trip to Destin: Pickleball, Beach Days & More
What started years ago as a group gathering around pickleball games and mahjong afternoons has slowly grown into something much more meaningful. Many of us are in retirement or semi-retirement now, finally reaching a season of life where there’s more room for friendship, spontaneity, and saying yes to experiences together.

Why This Girls Trip Meant So Much
Somewhere between the group texts, beach walks, shared dinners, and laughing until we could hardly breathe, this trip became less about simply getting away and more about the memories we’re building together.
Different personalities, different backgrounds, and completely different life stories somehow come together naturally once everyone is sitting around the same table or watching the sunset over the beach in Destin.

And one of the things that made this particular trip especially memorable for me was getting to experience it from the other side for once.
I’m usually the one organizing itineraries, reservations, spreadsheets, and logistics for group and family trips, so it honestly felt like such a gift to simply show up knowing everything had already been thoughtfully handled.
Deby did an incredible job coordinating the week from arrivals, dinners, activities, beach supplies, to transportation and all the little details in between while somehow making the entire trip feel relaxed and effortless at the same time.
That balance is much harder to pull off than people realize. And somehow, she made it all feel easy.
Settling Into Beach Week
Arrival day was intentionally simple. People filtered into the condo throughout the afternoon carrying beach bags, groceries, oversized Stanley cups, and enough luggage to suggest we might be staying a month instead of a week.
One of my favorite touches was the welcome gift bags waiting on each bed with little things like sunscreen, Liquid I.V., lip balm, koozies, and matching trip tee shirts. Nothing elaborate, just thoughtful details that immediately made the condo feel festive and welcoming.
Nobody wanted a formal dinner after traveling all day, so we ordered Chipotle delivery, opened drinks on the balcony, and watched the sunset while everyone unpacked and caught up.
Honestly, it was exactly the kind of slow beginning the trip needed.
In the Groove
By the second morning, the week naturally settled into its own rhythm.
Some people woke up early for beach walks while others slowly emerged with coffee an hour later. Since pickleball is already a regular part of life for many of us back home, several mornings included reserved court time from 8–10 a.m., complete with warm-up TikTok dances and far more competitive energy than anyone expected before breakfast.
The weekly bike rentals ended up being one of the best decisions of the trip. There’s something about biking along beach roads with salty air, messy beach hair, and iced coffee in hand that instantly makes you feel like you’re officially on vacation.

Most days unfolded some version of the same way with coffee and conversation in the mornings, pickleball or bike rides, long beach afternoons, poolside mahjong, cocktails while everyone slowly got ready for dinner, and late-night conversations that somehow stretched for hours.
And honestly, some of the best moments happened in between all the planned activities.
Music playing while everyone got ready.
Wine bottles open on the kitchen counter.
Beach towels draped over every chair.
Someone searching for a missing sandal.
Three conversations happening at once.
The familiar chaos that somehow becomes part of the fun when a large group settles into vacation life together.
And then there were the beaches.
The water in Destin really does look unreal the first time you see it in person. The bright turquoise water, soft white sand, and sunsets that make entire groups stop talking for a minute just to watch.
Hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch at the Condo
One of my favorite mornings of the entire trip ended up being one of the simplest.
After several nights of restaurants and busy schedules, we stayed in for a slow Mother’s Day brunch at the condo. Nobody rushed to get ready. Coffee cups stayed full for hours, people wandered into the kitchen in pajamas, and breakfast stretched well into late morning while music played softly in the background.
The kitchen island slowly filled with breakfast casseroles, fruit trays, pastries, mini quiches, chicken salad croissants, cinnamon rolls, and colorful fruit boards while someone arranged flowers and another person started pouring mimosas.
It reminded me how often the most memorable moments on group trips happen in the spaces between the big plans.
No reservations.
No timelines.
Just everyone lingering together a little longer before eventually wandering down to the beach.
For larger girls trips, condo brunches honestly work beautifully because they give everyone a slower morning to recharge between beach days and late nights. Everything feels more relaxed, more personal, and far less rushed than trying to coordinate another large restaurant reservation.
The Nights We’ll Still Be Talking About
Out to Dinner
One of our first group dinners was at The Craft Bar, and it felt like the moment everyone fully settled into the trip. Conversations lingered long after dinner ended, and by the time we wandered toward a beach bonfire afterward, the week had already started feeling less scheduled and more effortless.

One of the easiest and most memorable nights of the week was our private beach bonfire.
We kept dinner simple with pizza pickup on the way to the beach setup, and somehow pizza eaten barefoot in beach chairs with the sun setting tastes infinitely better than it does anywhere else.
Nobody cared about reservations or perfect outfits that night except for the matching “Girl Gang” shirts that quickly became mandatory vacation attire. It was just music, firelight, s’mores, dancing, pizza boxes scattered everywhere, and conversations that lasted long after it got dark.
Game Night
Back at the condo, the night shifted into a completely different kind of game night that did not include pickleball.

Someone pulled out the game, Hitster, which quickly turned into singing along to songs from every decade, followed by cards, ridiculous drinking games, storytelling, and the kind of college-era games many of us hadn’t played in years but somehow still remembered instantly. Everyone kept teaching each other new variations and forgotten rules, and as the night went on, the laughter got louder, the storytelling got funnier, and the overall noise level probably rose enough for the neighbors to know we were having a very good time.
Another night we stayed in completely, ordered barbecue from Moe’s Original BBQ, and turned the patio into a casual movie night with blankets, cocktails, and popcorn. After several busy nights out, it ended up being exactly what everyone needed.
Then came the unofficial “dress-up” night at Pazzo Italiano with flowy dresses, beach jewelry, vacation photos before dinner, patio cocktails afterward, and a birthday celebration once we got back to the condo.
But somehow, the funniest night of the entire trip happened after dinner at Camille’s at Crystal Beach.
Get Ready for Lip Sync Night
In previous years, karaoke had been the signature late-night activity. This year, someone jokingly suggested a lip sync competition instead, and apparently several women took that suggestion very seriously long before anyone arrived in Florida.
The van driving down to Destin had hauled full bins of costumes, and secret rehearsals had apparently been happening in garages for weeks.
By the time we got back to the condo, the living room transformed into a full performance stage complete with choreography, backup dancers, props, and dramatic entrances.

The performances ranged from the Backstreet Boys to Sister Act, Sonny & Cher, and even a full Lucy and Ethel routine inspired by I Love Lucy.
By the end of the night, people were laughing so hard we could barely get through the final performances.
I honestly don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in years.
Rainy Days Ended Up Being Part of the Fun Too
Like any beach trip, we had a few stretches of rain during the week, but honestly, some of the funniest memories happened indoors.
A quick storm turned into a movie theatre outing and impromptu mahjong tournament one afternoon. Another rainy evening became a cozy patio movie night with blankets, barbecue takeout, cocktails, and popcorn while everyone waited for the weather to clear.
Large beach condos are surprisingly perfect for this kind of trip because even downtime feels entertaining when everyone is together.
Some people wandered out for coffee runs or beach shopping while others stayed back for card games, playlists, snacks, and long conversations around the kitchen island.
Not every memorable vacation moment has to be scheduled.
Ending the Week on the Water
For our final evening, we booked a sunset cruise on the Bikini Bottom Boat, which ended up being the perfect way to close out the trip.

By then everyone was sun tired, slightly emotional that the week was ending, and fully settled into the easy rhythm that only happens after several uninterrupted days together.
We intentionally kept dinner casual that night with leftovers, snacks, and simple takeout because nobody wanted another scheduled evening.
Watching the sunset over the water together while dolphins surfaced nearby felt like the perfect ending to the week.
What I’ll Remember Most
Of course I’ll remember the beach days, seafood dinners, bike rides, poolside cocktails, and sunsets.
But honestly, the things I’ll probably remember most are the slower moments:
coffee on the balcony in the mornings
laughing while everyone got ready for dinner
bike rides for iced coffee or wine tastings
late-night patio conversations
sandy feet everywhere
pickleball games that somehow always became competitive
the absolute chaos of the lip sync party
and how easy everything eventually felt by the end of the week
That’s really the sweet spot of a great girls trip, organized enough that everyone can relax, but flexible enough to leave room for all the moments nobody could have planned ahead of time.
Why Destin Works So Well for a Girls Trip
Destin ended up being the perfect backdrop for this kind of trip because it never felt like we had to over-plan every minute.
Between the white sand beaches, bike paths, casual seafood restaurants, sunset cruises, beach bonfires, rooftop bars, and large condo rentals, the week naturally found its own rhythm. Everyone could join in as much or as little as they wanted, which honestly may be the secret to successful group travel in this season of life.
And for larger groups, condo life really is the way to go.
Having shared kitchens, balconies, living spaces, beach access, and enough room for everyone to gather together made the week feel far more connected than separate hotel rooms ever could.
Also, enough bathrooms matter far more than anyone realizes until traveling with a large group of women.
Planning Your Own Girls Trip to Destin
Looking back, a few things made traveling with such a large group feel surprisingly easy.
Having one main organizer simplified almost everything. Dinner reservations were made ahead of time, pickleball courts were reserved early, bikes were arranged for the week, and enough downtime was intentionally left between activities so nobody felt overscheduled.
A few things we were especially glad we packed:
quick-dry towels, insulated tumblers, portable speakers, beach coverups, card games, matching pajamas, and apparently an entire suitcase dedicated to costumes and props for late-night games nobody originally planned on taking so seriously.
And next time, we’ll absolutely use Splitwise from the beginning because twenty-four women can somehow go through an astonishing amount of coffee creamer, bottled water, ice, snacks, sunscreen, and toilet paper in just a few days.
If you’re planning a similar trip, my biggest advice would honestly be not to overcomplicate the itinerary.
Plan your anchor dinners or activities, leave room for downtime, reserve the important things early, and let the rest of the week unfold naturally.
Because in the end, the best moments are usually the ones nobody planned at all.

And maybe that’s what makes trips like this feel so special in this season of life.
Not perfection.
Not packed itineraries.
Just time together.
Somewhere between the beach walks, patio conversations, pickleball games, and late-night laughter, this girls trip became about far more than a vacation.
It became one of those weeks you know you’ll still be talking about years later.

The best part of our week in Destin wasn’t any single dinner, beach day, or activity.
It was simply having uninterrupted time together.
The beach walks, patio conversations, bike rides, bonfires, ridiculous late-night games, and laughter that echoed through the condo long after midnight are the moments we’ll remember most.
That’s the beauty of a great girls trip.
Not a packed itinerary. Not perfect plans.
Just good friends, plenty of time together, and enough flexibility for the best memories to happen naturally.
